A week off from work is a wonderful thing. A week off and going for a short visit to Savannah is wonderful!
My cousin lives there (well, on Tybee Island, actually) and she was able to get us comp tickets to many of the local museums. Being of limited finances, this was a boon and a blessing.
The first day, Sunday afternoon, we drove up. My cousin had us meet her at her office, which is smack dab in the middle of the Historic District. So, while we waited for her, we took pictures in and around Lafayette Square and went into the Cathedral of St John the Baptist briefly. (Our trolley driver a few days later said he'd had one of his passengers ask him where the "Catholic Baptist church was". He had to assume she meant that one.;-)
From her office we went to Bonaventure Cemetery. It was the one place I knew I really wanted to go while we were there. You know me and cemeteries, and from a photographic point of view, this place is like the Holy Grail. Fantastic old monuments, famous people, but no Bird Girl. She's long since been moved to the Telfair Museum. But I got some amazing imges with my little point and shoot. Okay, so I'm not a photography purist. I want an image that looks nice, I don't really care about how it gets there. Maybe someday I'll learn to take photographs properly... nah. I'm too impatient and lazy.
So, DH and I visited the Jepson Center. Now, I know my taste in art runs to more traditional stuff, but seriously, old decoupaged cigar boxes with found objects, such as dessicated dead frogs, is art? And there were hordes of these things in one gallery!
But one display was really cool, called 'Counterillumination'. Upon entering the darkened gallery, motion sensors detected our prescence and the display 'woke up.' Yes folks, I'm not joking. The display was madu up of computer fans, LEDs, plastic bags, motion sensors, mini screens. Imagine curious deep sea creatures, made out of plastic water bottles and tiny motors all coming to life and performing for you. Very cool.
We also explored the Telfair Academy, which was more our taste in art, but the upper floor was closed, so we didn't get to see most of the art they had on display. I did get to see an enormous painting of 'The Black Prince at Crecy' I mean the canvas has to be fifteen feet tall and maybe twenty wide. No joke. Sweeping landscape, armored men and horses, what more can one ask for? The Telfair is where the Bird Girl is, though I did not get a good picture of her, too many people clustering around, plus the statue is located on a narrow third floor mezzanine. It might have been nice to know that half their collection was not available for viewing before we went it, but it was raining anyway...
On Tybee Island, where we were staying, it was wonderful. It was also the off-season, which suits me just fine. I don't go to the beach to marinate in oil and turn into a giant melanoma. And I would, no doubt, as fair skinned as I am. DH is just as sensitive to the sun and heat so winter is a perfect time to go. Plus, neither of us much likes crowds, so the off-season is where it's at!
So, directly across the street from where we were staying was this liffle hole-in-the-wall eatery called The Breakfast Club. Absolutely fantastic food. Nothing fancy, just good in every way. Seriously, if you're ever there, eat there. But they're only open between 7 AM and 1 PM, so you'll have to get up and get moving. It's worth it.
I could totally live in Savannah or Tybee. Mellow, laid-back, relaxed lifestyle. The only moment of strife I encountered while there was a guy across the street, near the Sorrell-Weed House, in front of a bank, yelling into his cell-phone, "Why do you have to be such a bitch?!!!" multiple times. He was easily heard by everyone the length of the block, both sides of the street. SOme mischief prompted me to record him on my camera but my husband reminded me that I only had the one set of batteries and we hadn't yet gotten on the trolley to see the highlights of Savannah. True. While it would have been great fun to post the video on YouTube and have the world laugh at this idiot, I would have been upset if I had gotten to Forsyth Park and hadn't been able to take pictures of the fountain.
